Using a metronome will help with students on building the rhythm foundation and once they get to a comfortable level with fundamentals I will have students bring in music that is a higher level to work on to keep their flute playing fun. I always encourage students to bring in any band music as well. I like to make out an adjustable "curriculum" to give to parents so they can also keep track of what the students will be working on each lesson or looking forward to if the student wants to prepare for the next lesson (based on ability). This method, and other methods similar to this are great for teaching young students the fundamentals of music and provide insight on proper playing technique; but do so without becoming too overly technical. My approach to teaching is to make it a fun and positive learning experience that they look forward to and stay inspired. Patience, encouragement and understanding of where the student is musically are crucial. I like to emphasize the idea that nothing happens overnight, only through effective practice and repetition. Having this mindset, they will no doubt see results in no time. I always like to establish a goal for each lesson, suggest cool drum videos on Youtube and make sure the student feels like they are free to ask a lot of questions if they aren't understanding something. Music has been one of my passions since I was a little girl! I took up piano at age 8, violin at 13, and drums at 15. I've been known to belt out a tune here and there, too! There is nothing better than having an afternoon to lose yourself to creating and playing music. In high school, I was Concert Master of the Philharmonic Orchestra. I've had the opportunity to perform on the drums at various venues and was invited by my drum instructor to return to the studio to become an instructor myself, where I taught for three years.
