It is extremely important to set realistic goals for each student. I accomplish this by isolating each issue and not trying to spend one lesson addressing everything. Instead of overwhelming the student, I try to set realistic and obtainable goals for each student while retaining the challenge. As the student improves, I gradually start setting more challenging goals according to each student's ability. I like to make music learning a self-engaged process. Students will keep track of their assignments, make some of the decisions about what music to play, and be expected to practice a minimum of 5 or 6 days per week. Students are sometimes reluctant to have discipline at first, but once they realize that they are making fast progress and overcoming musical challenges, they tend to have a great time. I started teaching when I was about 15 years old, I lead a dance group and choreographed a 50 min show about african heritage in North and South American cultures. It was a big project and it helped me realize how much I loved teaching. From then on I've taught several subjects from dance, to Spanish and voice lessons. As a teacher I constantly monitor things like student posture, fingering, phrasing, dynamics etc.. I choose to work on one aspect of the myriad of struggles wisely. I allow ample time to discuss the emotional responses (both positive and negative) the student is having to a piece. The student must learn to become self-aware in terms of their own emotive response. When I can relate harmonically to the fact that a student is responding to certain chord progressions or certain harmonic style I then make a point of going over these one by one; going over each in different keys if necessary.
