For beginning students I like to teach basic techniques. Scales, breathing, knowledge etc. Once the student starts to get comfortable with the beginning stages I introduce songs that I believe will challenge their voice. I listen, critique, and offer knew options of note placement & tone. My goal is not to change the way the student sings but to enhance it and clean it up. Once we have covered the basic foundations of the flute and have formed a core sound, I then introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for the students. At age fourteen I started studying music theory and composition with a local kappelmeister. In university I continued to study classical theory at Syracuse University and then Jazz Theory at Hampshire College.
