I also joined the school jazz ensemble. I have studied percussion for several years as well, and this has given me a solid foundation in rhythms and reading different rhythms. After college, I sought out respected teachers in my area as well as attended different guitar workshops around the USA so I could continue my music studies. I do not teach from prefabricated books but rather teach songs to students and within those songs there are lessons. I have devised my own teaching methods which have been highly successful. Teaching for me works best on an individual level. Students work on different levels and languages concerning music, and you have to be able to adapt to them. Some people might understand everything from the get go, some students need graphic support, some student need to learn song to understand what they are doing. The important part of being an instructor is not the actual material to be taught but being able to clear the way for the student to learn and teach himself, as well as providing a direction towards understanding the instrument and music through the taste and necessities of each student.
