I have enjoyed teaching music since I was in High School. I I enjoy using my experience as a multi-instrumentalist to teach students about the joy of playing with others. Social dynamics in music are important and once a student can learn the basics, I really enjoy encouraging them to find others to play with and learn to experience the music they enjoy on their own. Of course theory and regular practice are both very important. Read More

Phase 4: Intermediate Riffs and Techniques This is an extension of Phase 2 but expands on the difficulty and span of the riffs. At this point, the student will have very quick and strong hands and will be able to play difficult songs. We also will dive into the "why" here. I'll start to explain scales and scale degrees in relation to the same songs the student loves to play. Here we will also hone in techniques like bending, hammer-ons, and pull-offs. Read More

For younger students and all of my students who want to learn how to read music I start with the Mel Bay Guitar Method Vol. 1. As we progress through that I usually start giving out more reading that is complimentary to the direction that the student is going in. However, I know there are several guitar students who don't necessarily want to learn how to read music which I am fine with teaching. Read More

I have taught elementary, middle, and high school music and have enjoyed each experience. I was teaching chorus, class keyboard, music theory, music appreciation, and modern band ensemble. I always want for my students to feel successful which is why I not only encourage their practicing but provide specific details on what they need to practice so they feel the most successful and know exactly what they need to practice. I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. I have been teaching music for 15 years, during this time I have been able to understand the diversity of paste in which we all learn. My purpose is to inspired and challenge my students so that they can find their own voice and style, during my classes we find out what the best way to achieve our goals is by working hard, having fun and creating a musical relationship. My lessons are an interaction between myself and the student where I point out their strengths and weaknesses, an environment of love and patience where music serves us as the medium for growth. For all students, regardless of age or skill level, I like to gauge their musical interests (i.e., what music they listen to, what inspired them to pick up the guitar, etc.), and then work from there. For someone who has never picked up an instrument before, I generally work out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1. Once we're past that, I'll start showing them some basic songs, as well as seeing what kinds of songs they would be interested in learning. Read More
