For all students, I like to begin teaching using the Alfred Piano Method Books. These series provide site reading and music theory for all levels of experience and ages. Depending on each students progress and grasp of the fundamentals, as well as the more advanced students, I will tailor the lessons based on each individual's interest, such as learning various styles of music. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I access their skills after a handful of lessons and adjust to their needs going forward for them to continue to advance as musicians. Read More

There are two selected teaching methods that I confer with in order to select the most appropriate method for my students. For my beginning students, I select Schaum (Books 1-3) for piano lessons, and Benners Book One for theory lessons. The Schaum methods offers bright and color-coded books, which reflects that various learning levels. Once the students have attained the basic keyboard and theory fundamentals, the students will be given an assessment of their mastery, they will advance to the immediate level. Read More

I am a passionate musician. In fact, I come from a family full of talented musicians and educators. The most influential on me is my father. He is the head of the Instrumental department at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC. He pretty much sparked the idea of education in music for me. I have a degree in Jazz Studies from Howard University. Howard created the same vocal jazz program that was highlighted on NBC's competition the Sing-off. Read More

My teaching experience started in college when I became a Head Section Leader at Norfolk State University. I taught privately while earning my degree. I've also taught many bands as Director of Upper Brass from Southwest DeKalb to Asst. Band Director at Edna Karr High School in New Orleans) and I had the great task of not only starting a band from scratch but having the ONLY elementary school band in Cobb County in 2017-18. Generally, my teaching style depends on the student. Why is that? Everyone is unique, and everyone learns differently. It would be absolutely foolish of me to ever think that I can use one teaching method or style for each and every student. So I teach based on the student's learning style and predispositions. Also I tend to do alot of finger techniques as well as aural training, because I believe even though music reading is essential, it does you no good if you can't respond musically to the sounds and the nuances of your environment.
