I also begin ear training, chords, and solo repertoire as the student becomes ready. For voice students, I begin with breathing, vocal technique, and skill-level appropriate songs. As a musician, it is important to refine performance, technique, and style. I like to find out what the student's goal or difficulty is in each of those categories. Then we plan a recital usually 4-6 months away. I ask the student to choose 4-5 songs that they enjoy and that feel would be a feat to perform. I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. I took private lessons for 7 years from four different guitar instructors, so I know what works and what doesn't.
