Achievements & Recognition

I am honored to have received The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award (November 2016), presented through the Corporation for National and Community Service and signed by President Barack Obama. This recognition reflects my long-standing commitment to service, mentorship, and excellence in education.

As a songwriter, I was recognized in the National Songwriters Competition (May 1995) as a four-time Quarter Finalist, highlighting both my creativity and dedication to musical artistry.

My formal training includes a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music (August 1987), where I developed a strong foundation in music performance and theory.

Beyond my personal achievements, I take great pride in the success of my students. Many have earned scholarships, advanced placement in college-level music programs, and opportunities to excel academically and artistically. One of my former piano students went on to become Miss America, and another has performed on Broadway in a lead role in The Lion King.

These accomplishments reflect not only dedication and hard work, but a passion for helping students reach their highest potential.

EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience spans many years as both a performer and instructor, and I currently operate my own studio, KR Music Studio, in Stockbridge, Georgia. I specialize in piano and voice instruction, working with students of all ages and skill levels in a professional, yet comfortable in-home studio environment. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding students not only in developing strong musical foundations, but also in discovering their unique creative voice. One of the key principles I emphasize is consistency—regular, focused practice is essential for growth and confidence. I also believe that learning should be enjoyable and inspiring, so I incorporate a blend of classical fundamentals with modern styles such as gospel, R&B, and contemporary music to keep students engaged and motivated. If a student isn’t enjoying the process, then I know I need to adjust my approach. In addition to weekly lessons, I encourage my students to participate in recitals, showcases, and performance opportunities, as well as explore songwriting and original composition. These experiences help build confidence and give students a sense of accomplishment beyond the lesson room. I’m passionate about helping each student reach their full potential, and I’m always excited to welcome new students who are ready to grow and enjoy the journey of music.

LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and results-driven, designed to meet each student exactly where they are. I believe every student learns differently, so I take a personalized approach—breaking concepts down into simple, practical steps that build both skill and confidence. I combine strong musical fundamentals with hands-on learning, so students aren’t just practicing exercises—they’re actively making music from the very beginning. Whether it’s piano or vocal instruction, I focus on helping students understand what they’re doing, not just memorize it, which leads to faster progress and lasting growth. I create a supportive and positive environment where students feel comfortable taking risks, asking questions, and expressing themselves. At the same time, I maintain structure and consistency to ensure steady improvement. My goal is for every student to leave each lesson feeling accomplished, motivated, and excited about their musical journey—gaining not only skill, but confidence and a genuine love for music.
