I began teaching my first piano student when I was 14 years old. I have since enjoyed teaching in many different ways. I've taught private students, homeschool choruses, pre-K-8th grade (using music curriculum that I created), 8th grade science students, large choirs of beautiful angelic children's voices, adult church choirs, youth and adult bands, gospel choirs, reading literacy students,and soldier medicshow to prepare for their responsibilities. I love being able to send students on their way for the day knowing that they put their best foot forward. Even if they did not come to a lesson prepared, being able to see growth in the small amount of time I'm with them is enough for me. I understand that every student progresses at their own pace, so I work with them and their parents to make sure that realistic goals are set and written down to hold the student, parent, and myself to this growth plan. At the first lesson is just seeing where they are and what kind of music they would want to play(hymnal songs, gospel songs, soundtracks, opera, classical etc). Then at the beginning of each lesson would be theory(note recognition, counting, fingering etc). Then review on what they practiced for the week and if they are confident with the pieces add a few more songs. At Christmas time and the end of spring I like to have to have a recital for the students to play a few of the songs they learned for their friends and family.  Read More

Practice is important, but smart practice is essential. I help the student to practice efficiently without wasting time or energy. Smart practice also means to get results and achieve goals quickly. Technique is tremendously important in order to execute the music. Classical music is the fundamental and first step a student needs to take in order to learn and perform music properly. I look at each student individually to assess their potential and goals before setting a book or particular study plan. Once the student has begun basic technique exercises, I assign book levels and vocal repertoire that fits their interests as well as matching what I feel the student needs to be working on. I have toured many times in both rock and metal projects. This expereince helps me in preparing my students for live performances if they wish to go this route. My marching expereince can help my students who are interested in marching or concert band. I have worked with many students who want to take their marching skills to the next level.
