As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. I began playing the flute at age 10 and eagerly continued, participating in every musical opportunity I had in middle school, high school, and college. In 2010, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Susquehanna University with my Bachelors in Music degree in Music Education with a concentration in flute. As a believer in the "magic" of positive reinforcement, I don't see any other way in encouraging my students to make progress. During a lesson, we first review material that was assigned to practice from the previous lesson. Clear instruction on how to make progress is given, as well as practice goals for the next lesson. I began teaching privately in college in 2000. Since then I have maintained a studio of students in my home and in their homes. I believe focused, goal-specific practice sessions are key to developing a love for music and one's on instrument. Many of my students have earned superiors at state festivals and have won music scholarships to various schools. I have three different sets of books for new students that are children; so if you have more than one starting lessons, you can hear different songs. I typically use Piano Adventures, Bastien, or Alfred, although Piano Adventures is my favorite. I suggest the lesson book, theory book and technique books be usedsimultaneously to give the student the most well-rounded lesson. For adults or even teenagers, I like to learn about what interests them musically and work towards that style or song. Read More
