I began teaching 7 years ago in high school and I have continually taught students of all ages since. As a flutist trained with teachers in jazz, classical, and pop, I am experienced playing and teaching many styles including classical, opera, swing, pop, and musicals. Teaching is the most rewarding aspect of my career as it is an important way for me to share music with others. I first started teaching private flute lessons in 2013 working primarily with K-12 students. In 2015, I taught flute sectionals and music classes for middle school students as a counselor at the University of Colorado Boulder Summer Music Academy. I also served as Event Coordinator for the University of Colorado Boulder's Teaching Peace Through Music chapter, where I helped plan and promote classes on music education and learned from instructors working with underprivileged youth. For all of my students I like to approach the lesson through the lens of preparation, skills, solos, and fun. I believe it is very important to prepare the mind and the body for the lesson to get the maximum benefit. In all of my lessons I begin with appropriate warm-ups before moving on to skills and technique. I use a variety of method books depending on the goals and wishes of my students, and I tailor them to make sure they are learning all the skills they need to be able to play the solos and fun music that they want to learn. For most woodwinds I begin with the Rubank family of methods and duet books. I favor many of the Berklee press books for music theory, voice, keyboards, genre studies, guitar, bass, composition, ear training, harmony and arranging.
