While in the AF, though, I've been blessed to have several part-time college teaching jobs. I taught saxophone, sax quartet and clarinet for five years at Adams State University in Colorado. For five of my six years in Illinois, I taught saxophone and sax quartet at McKendree University. I've always maintained a private studio of students ranging in age from 8 to 80+. Briefly: The flute teaching methods and books I use vary and are based on the needs of a student. As a student advances, I also include music theory and basic ear training. A little more in-depth: As many students have begun their flute studies in their elementary school band, I look over the books and music they have been playing from in school, listen to their sound and technique, watch their posture, and make a decision on teaching books to expand and enhance their current level. I teach beginning students the fundamentals using tried and true exercise books and help them pick the best instrument for them. For intermediate students I draw from my large collection of music to advance their technique and improve their expression. With more advanced students we work on specific problem areas they may be having such as tone quality, or advanced or alternate fingering techniques using music from classical, jazz and orchestral works.
