In addition to running a thriving private studio, I have served as Associate Instructor of Flute at Indiana University during my graduate studies and as a Guest Artist at the Denver School of the Arts. I've been teaching most of my adult life. I started tutoring while still in high school, and I continued as a teaching assistant as a college student. I taught at Hope College for six years in a number of different subjects: saxophone, jazz ensembles, music theory, aural skills, piano class, and music appreciation. I have had my students make All-State Honor Band/All-State Choir, I have had students get college scholarships and many have been accepted into colleges as music majors, I have had students nominated for the All-American Army Marching Band, and have even had students perform solo recitals in public venues. My methods differ for each instrument. For piano I will start with Alfred's basic piano course if the student is a beginner. It helps students visualize the basic techniques for sitting and playing the piano in a way that will prevent injury. From there we walk through the book until the student understands how the keys and reading music works. After this, I start to assign different songs and/or assignments that match the student's learning style and interest in music. Read More
