I encourage my students to write their own pieces and perform for one another in my "musical get togethers" held in my studio or sometimes in larger venues. I have also organized 'cello ensembles that would often incorporate a singer, similar to what Pablo Casals did, 50 years ago. It's important to move at the student's pace - whatever speed that may be. It's important to build a solid foundation but that doesn't necessarily mean mastery or perfection. It's easy to lose interest if stuck on one piece to long so we'll move through the material as quickly or as slowly as the student desires as long as the foundation is there. I am a 32 year old musician. I grew up playing the cello, starting at age 5. I picked up other instruments as I grew older and eventually went to a conservatory. I have performed in a wide variety of contexts throughout my life including professional symphonies and popular music ensembles.
