I like to always start off by having the student play the piece that we've been working on for the past few weeks to check on his/her progress and to address any needs or changes we need to make. I also work with the student on his/her scales and building the foundation needed to play more technically challenging pieces. I find it very important to work on technique as many players nowadays often struggle with more difficult pieces and do not execute certain sections as smoothly due to a lack of attention during his/her early stages in building up the foundation and technique. For BEGINNING students, I teach piano but also theory as well. In order to play the piano accurately, the student must know theory. I teach using James Bastien's primary-level 4 books. Within those books, they offer a Piano book, Theory book, Performance book, and a Technic book. I incorporate a variety of different lesson books to ensure musical reading while encouraging consistent exercises in using our musical ear. For beginning piano students, I use the method books from Faber's Piano Adventures series. If the student gets bored with one method book, I will mostly likely top it off with something else from Alfred. I stress mostly on counting proper rhythm, learning alphabets, and finger numbers for early age groups. For intermediate students, I would expect students toalreadybe able to read music aside from the rhythm challenges.
