I try to incorporate some form of a goal to achieve, whether its a recital, audition, or just an informal get together with another student. In order to reach these goals its very important to instill proper practice techniques. So for weekly assignments, I have the student's practice scales, finger exercises, and chord changes. Once the student can get the basics down I start with basic rock and pop tunes, or whatever music the student happens to be interested in. Some time in 2006 I was asked by the director to become his assistant and began taking on groups of my own. In 2007 I also joined ECMM as a sales associate and apprentice luthier in their shop, selling and working on guitars and other instruments. It was unfortunate that ECMM closed in 2009 after 33 years. Working at East Coast was a great experience for me and something I will always cherish. What I loved most about the ROA program was that as I transitioned from a student to a teacher, I adopted the same teaching style as my mentor: let the students choose what they want to learn and help them to learn and perfect it.
