For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a simple and fun melody from a song they enjoy. While learning this they will learn to read the notation, the notes they are playing and the scale it is in. This process will continue on into chords and chord shapes from songs they enjoy! I also will learn what their weaknesses and strengths are and push them to improve all around. I have a pretty laid back style of teaching.
