A 2009 graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in Composition and Vocal Pedagogy, I've worked in musical theatre for the past 15 years. As I said before, every student is complitely different, and is important to understand what they need from the very first time, so you can be an inspiration for them and not a waste of time. The voice technique is so important, basic, for a profesional singer, but is not the only thing you need to become a good musician/singer. As all of the aspects of technique are being built in the studio, it is my job to ensure that I am building a musician. This means that I go over how the student needs to learn a piece and how to perform a piece. Often times with young students, they do not have the musical skills to teach themselves the pieces assigned. Sometimes the voice teacher’s job is to “plunk out the notes.” I highly encourage my students to take piano lessons and to use technology resources to aid them in building musicianship so they feel confident reading music.
