For my younger to play games with them that teaches them the fundamentals of music theory while also having fun during the lesson. For my older students I like to see what gets them excited during the lesson and move forward accordingly. That can be extremely different from Student to Student but I do like to stay involved with the process and positive throughout. I have an arsenal of exercises and tools that I apply as needed for each student, and generally give each student an overview with lots of reinforcement in subsequent lessons at my concepts of technique. Generally each lesson involves vocalese - scales, triads, increasing in difficulty as appropriate and based on individual areas of need, followed by work on the repertoire.
