I began teaching private lessons four years ago in various genres such as jazz, pop, musical theater, and classical - with a bit of music theory for those who have expressed interest. Students of mine have participated in recitals and have written their own compositions. On top of private lessons, I was a Choral Music Instructor for the Massachusetts city, Chelsea, and its Community Youth Chorus. For children, it is important to know the fundamental (produce sound, pitch, breathing, etc) and it has to be FUN! I start off with the book Singing Lessons for Little Singers and when start introducing songs as the student progress. For adults, it's best to know what each students want and need and I'll walk them according to their needs. Techniques and repertoire comes hand in hand and I like to have a balance of both.I want to create an environment where the students will be learning what they want to learn balanced out with what they need to learn. For beginning students I like to teach basic techniques. Scales, breathing, knowledge etc. Once the student starts to get comfortable with the beginning stages I introduce songs that I believe will challenge their voice. I listen, critique, and offer knew options of note placement & tone. My goal is not to change the way the student sings but to enhance it and clean it up. For me, music is not just a career, it's my life. It is a form of de-stressing, a moment away from the busy city life. When I teach, I like to share those same ideas with my students so that they may understand, that although there is discipline and responsibility involved in learning an instrument, the principal goal is to enjoy the process and the results. I have a set of vocalises that I have comprised throughout the years. They begin with simple breathing exercises and hums to enable the student to connect to their breath, and move to more intricate scales and arpeggios to develop a strong, even tone. I choose repertoire that students truly enjoy to sing, as I have found that they will make great progress while practicing a song they love.
