Soon I was asked to teach the other dancers to sing as well, and those were my first singing students. I’ve been teaching singing ever since. Even though Musical Theater is my first love, many of my students study a wide variety of music styles and bring personal storytelling skills to all music. They perform at open mics, school showcases, local musicals, churches, and clubs. I belonged to that chorus until I graduated from Marcus High School in 2013. In addition, I was a member of my school choruses beginning in fifth grade. Additionally, I'll incorporate popular musical melodies in EZ plays and have my students begin learning chords so they can begin lead sheet reading some of their favorite tunes. For piano beginners, I generally start with the Faber method books, but I always supplement with other books or pieces that are tailored to the students abilities and interests. There will be short pieces to practice at home which can be mastered in a week or two, and frequently there will be longer challenge pieces that will be worked on for several weeks with the goal of giving the student a piece they will enjoy playing for themselves or for friends and family.
