I teach from a flexible curriculum depending on the student's goals and interests. If someone wants to learn technique, music theory, songwriting, how to play Taylor Swift songs, arranging, composing, confidence, et cetera we will work on what is driving them to take lessons and learn! If the student is younger I will provide them with an organized syllabus and “fun” damentals! If they are older, I will help them find a way to stick with the music and accomplish their goals. I love working with students who want to dare to try new things! I think that students grow most when they are stretched out of their comfort zone. This allows them to find their limits physically, vocally, emotionally, and then to build upon their strengths to become the artists they strive to be. I like to incorporate physicality to help loosen the body and free the mind from overthinking. I also believe music is a place to express and will always meet my student where they are each lesson. As with most of my own studies, I try to adhere to the classical style of training. I will also adjust as to the student's individual needs. Of course with everyone, we will increase vocal range and experiment with what areas of style need more work than others, for example some may need to work harder at belting than head voice, and so on. The most important things in my opinion are warmup techniques, breath support, examining correct space, finding the lift in the soft palate, and letting go of any tension, especially in the jaw area, as it is not a part of the process!
