I will test range via keyboard and show activities concerning different diction exercises and breathing techniques. Every student has different learning needs and I tailor my lesson pace around them. I continued my classical training under the tutelage of a graduate of Philadelphia's world renown Academy of Vocal Arts and long-time performer of the Metropolitan Opera. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with simple chords and teach them a few fun songs. If the student is interested in learning how to read music, I will use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance if they are interested in performing live. For adults, I like to find out what they are most interested in, whether it is a specific genre, (jazz/classical) or if they are more interested in learning songs (classic rock/pop/etc.) or songwriting. I started teaching voice while at Purchase College and then focused on performing and writing, and came back to teaching last year. I use the techniques I've learned from my vocal teachers along the way, as long as my own ideas and perspectives on healthy, correct ways to sing your best. I believe strongly in teaching technique and basic theory in addition to singing whole pieces and performing.
