I am a teacher who has studied with many professionals through out my career. I am a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. I was on the road for twenty five years in various musical theatre productions, nightclubs, cruise ships, corporate and industrial shows, dinner theatre, stock, and regional theatre. I first started teaching in the 1990s, in Boston, MA., both privately, and at Berklee College of Music. Since moving to Sarasota, I've taught voice/chorus at Out Of Door Academy and IMG Academy. I've thoroughly enjoyed working with students who are motivated to learn and grow, sing for their personal pleasure, and/or with professional goals in mind. Strong vocal development is rooted in an extensive understanding of healthy technique. Depending on the level and age of the student we will spend anywhere from a third to half of the lesson working on vocal exercises, which will aid in the student's foundation of developing a strong technical background. Theory and sightreading is introduced on day-one, and emphasized in every lesson going forward. I have taught privately since 2006, though occasionally I will take two students from the same household, church or neighborhood and pair them up in what is known as a "partner lesson". Each person takes turns at the piano playing their respective scales, repertoire etc. and we offer one another encouragement as well as constructive criticism for those technical issues in need of improvement. When students are being lazy I call them out on it by saying something like, "What is that?"  It shakes them up and makes them realize I catch every mistake.  It's done in a lighthearted way so that the students feel comfortable with me as I do not want to drive away students who fear their teacher.  Comfort and discipline are imperative to help them achieve their goals.  If a student feels comfortable with their instrument they are more willing to practice and achieve a higher goal of performance.
