I find this method helps the student with dependency of string books and helps to harbor curiosity to the vast world of music and methods beyond one book. My methods are based on life experience from studying with different teachers through out my career and being an AMDA graduate. I am very old school, meaning I expect them to memorize lyrics and lines, and understand what they are saying and why. I approach teaching as a teacher who still performs,and learned by doing it. In regards to my teaching style, I tend to tailor it to the individual. Strict method adherence can leave students suffering. I do not teach using sheet music as I have inabilty to read myself. I do not believe sheet music makes a great player. I do believe it is a skill but it absolutely does not hinder the ability to become an amazing guitar player. I have taught privately since 2006, though occasionally I will take two students from the same household, church or neighborhood and pair them up in what is known as a "partner lesson". Each person takes turns at the piano playing their respective scales, repertoire etc. and we offer one another encouragement as well as constructive criticism for those technical issues in need of improvement.
