Overview:
I am a professional musician and experienced teacher. In 1974 I graduated from Dartmouth College with a major in Piano Performance and in 1976 I attained my MA in Composition from SUNY at Buffalo where I worked with Morton Feldman and Leo Smit- a close friend of Copland and Bernstein. I specialize in Classical, Jazz and Ragtime music and have played countless concerts on both sides of he Atlantic Ocean. I had a close association with the legendary Ragtime Pianist/Composer: EUBIE BLAKE, This friendship culminated in my performing at his 100th Birthday Party in New York's Shubert Theater
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching piano for many years. My formal teaching experience includes 7 years at Washington University where I produced 2 concert series: "The Masters Wrote Jazz"and annual "Ragtime Concerts". After my tenure at WU I began my teaching career at Performing Arts High Schools in the New York City Area. In NYC I taught at the Well-known "Talent Unlimited Performing Arts HS". Recently I taught at Lawrence Performing Arts HS for 6 years. Throughout this time I also maintained a Music Studio where I taught Piano and Vocal Coaching.
METHODS USED
My methods include a wide variety of resources. For beginning students I like both the Hal Leonard and John Thompson approaches. Along with the lesson books, i also encourage technical studies including scales, arpeggios and other studies to build up finger strength, dexterity and independence, As the student progresses, I introduce memory work, choring and basic improvisation. For the more advanced student I let them work on repertoire of their choosing, stressing a variety of genres and styles.
LESSON STYLE
It is extremely important that lessons are relaxed and fun. The student needs to work in a supportive and safe environment which encourages risk-taking and exploration. Praise and positive reinforcement are essential. I like students to explore their creative sides through composition and improvisation. I introduce chords and harmony and have students develop their own arrangements of pieces studied, This gives them a sense of empowerment and discovery. Students develop positive self-images and this makes the lesson process all that more enjoyable.

Steve is a fantastic piano instructor. I have been working with him for nearly two years. One lesson with him is worth hours of independent study. He is highly knowledgeable and skilled in theory, composition, and performance. I took piano up as an absolute beginner with Steve and I think lessons with him are what have kept me engaged despite a busy career and home life. He’s also a great guy!

Incredibly lucky to have found Steven. He is so creative and I have learned more from him in the last two years than I learned in ten years of lessons in the past. Challenging, encouraging, and enormously talented, I am inspired and motivated to continue my musical journey with him.
