Each student is different, so I use different method books to suit how he or she learns.  One student may learn quickly in note reading while another is stronger in memorization.  I use classical repertoire to give the students a solid foundation, and then as they progress, I will introduce popular songs that they love.  I incorporate music theory in all of my lessons because knowing theory opens many doors to what one can do with music! For beginning students that are children ages 4-10, I typically use Faber Piano Adventures, using Faber Piano Adventures for Older Beginners usually around 11 yo and up. I also provide outside supplemental technique exercises if I feel they are needed. Once they become proficient in reading music I will begin to add solo repertoire that implements the techniques learned up to that point. My methods include a wide variety of resources. For beginning students I like both the Hal Leonard and John Thompson approaches. Along with the lesson books, i also encourage technical studies including scales, arpeggios and other studies to build up finger strength, dexterity and independence, As the student progresses, I introduce memory work, choring and basic improvisation. For the more advanced student I let them work on repertoire of their choosing, stressing a variety of genres and styles. Read More
