My supportive approach to teaching begins with finding out where the student is in skill development and assessing the student's desire to learn or need for the subject matter, then assisting them, with materials and techniques, in learning the skills necessary for their chosen goals. For piano students several methods can be used: J.W.Schaum, John Thompson, Alfred Adult Course, etc. . For voice students, the Cocone, Vaccai, and Abt Methods can be applied. Read More

Diversity, high-energy, fast-paced, exploratory I believe teaching music doesn’t just teach music—it teaches us life skills that are applicable to any field and any situation. My teaching philosophy is a mix of many ideas, and I believe it is more successful the more places I "steal" ideas from. In all cases, the most important thing I try to teach is the love for this art and therefore for the instrument I'm teaching, because that is the best thing a teacher can teach you. Myteaching methodsinvolve a mind-body experience. I believe that a strong foundation in body alignment, breath support and management will allow students to build the skills they desire, regardless of musical style or genre. With an eye always on healthy singing,Iencourage students to experience many styles of vocal repertoire. Each student brings a set of perceptions about singing. Some of these are helpful, while others are habits that students work to eliminate.I believe that students need tounderstand the physical, emotional, and mental components of singing. Read More

I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

In lessons, I emphasize enjoying the process of learning. Learning an instrument does not happen over night. It takes years of practice and can be a joyful task if one enjoys the process. I send my students home with new goals each week to help guide their practice. Read More
