In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. I have been experiencing the love of playing and performing music for 40 years and still find it challenging to this day. Music is a journey of the senses which can open and expand our minds.For the first 11 years of my musical journey, I journeyed hours and hours in the discovery of the rhythms, notes and expression but I journeyed in solitude.What a wonderful joy wasawaiting me when I discovered how much fun it was to make music as part of an ensemble or as I like to think of it, a team.A musical team can be a band, an orchestra, a chorus, a churchchoir,a quartet, ora duet, and in all cases it is exhilarating to make music with other people.I hope that I can guide and encourage my students to learn to enjoy this journey that can provide a life time of adventure, social interaction and creativity. For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. I like to set attainable, yet challenging goals for each student. Ensuring that each student progresses at his or her own pace will encourage the development of a love for music. I try to acknoweldge a student's progress in order to inspire a desire to keep learning. Each lesson includes some technical exercises, a theory component, and other components pertinent to the specific instrument. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
