I have been teaching for 10 years, both privately and in schools. I have taught voice, piano, acting, general music education and directed choirs. I emphasize a performance based approach to music. I believe that communication is the essence and purpose of music, and good technique cannot be divorced from performance. I find that creating an warm, open, non-judgmental environment in lessons allows my students to get in touch with the meaning of the music and allows them to add their own personality to their piece to create a truly individual interpretation and performance. My favorite piano method book for children is the Bastien Piano Basics Series. Alternately, I sometimes use the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures. For very young children (3-6) "My First Piano Adventure," a Faber publication, is my book of choice. For adults, I usually use Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, though sometimes I skip method books and play pieces picked by the student. I've been teaching since graduating high school part but I've been teaching consistently for the last 5 years since graduating college. I am always exploring different genres,techniques, and ideas of what music is, which has made me a good all around musician. I am a big fan of making things fun because music to me is fun to play. I know it helped me when I was studying voice. Along with voice I find it important that a student understands and grasps the concepts of general music theory and the history of the pieces and composers of which they will be studying in hopes that such information will create an even deeper understanding and love for music. My students will be encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as finding music that they would like to perform, so that they can feel good about their voice and stay motivated to learn.
