I believe in allowing each student to decide their level of engagement with music. While some prefer to simply learn the basics of an instrument, others want to delve into more in-depth musical concepts and theory, and no one approach in more relevant than another. I look to show beginning or growing musicians the feeling of accomplishment that learning a new piece of music provides. Through exploring the songs and music that a student is most engaged with, as well as classics in a variety of genres, students gain a sense of how theory and/or techniques craft the music they love and know and that they, too, can create music that might one day be studied by future students. I am very big on learning by ear because it is the way I learned music most of my life. I have been teaching guitar and piano privately for the past 10 years ago, and was even selected by the Hartt School to be a piano tutor during my junior and senior years. In my undergraduate studies I took a few courses dedicated to the art of pedagogy. Through these courses I even had the opportunity to teach in front of renown faculty and gain insight from experts. I cater my lessons according to the students experience level. For beginners, I teach them a few chords, exercises and get them playing their favorite songs fairly quickly. This helps build some positive steps and motivates the student to keep playing. For more experienced students, I use the Berkley Guitar Method, teaching them chords, scales and simple songs which puts the theory into practice. I also teach students to read music, which helps them understand music theory and song structure. Read More

I always ask the students what their goals are. I include the parents as well in this conversation for the younger students, as I find that some parents want their children to learn how to read beginning at a young age. Other parents may specify that their child may simply want to learn how to play their favorite songs. For adults, I go with what they'd like to learn and take if from there. Read More
