For beginning students who are children, I typically start with basic guitar studies. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, we will begin learning songs and playing together. For adults, I go off of what the student wants to learn and guide my instruction accordingly. I always try to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I love playing with my students and have seen the beauty of a musical relationship again and again in my lessons. Read More

My teaching experiences go back at least 15 years. I started when I was in college and have never stopped teaching. In my lessons I focus on the whole child. Together we find out where their strengths lie and capitalize on those strengths. Music is supposed to be fun and that is one of my goals is to keep it fun and exciting for the student. I find it is best to expose the student to all types of music new and old and everything from classical to hip hop. Read More

Some time in 2006 I was asked by the director to become his assistant and began taking on groups of my own. In 2007 I also joined ECMM as a sales associate and apprentice luthier in their shop, selling and working on guitars and other instruments. It was unfortunate that ECMM closed in 2009 after 33 years. Working at East Coast was a great experience for me and something I will always cherish. What I loved most about the ROA program was that as I transitioned from a student to a teacher, I adopted the same teaching style as my mentor: let the students choose what they want to learn and help them to learn and perfect it. I have been teaching in the areas of greater New York City and Long Island for the last 12 years. Making a student's musical aspirations has always been a great source of joy for me. Mainly, I focus on building a student's repertoire of his or her favorite music, so that practice can be a source of expression and actualization instead of obligation and drudgery. Once the student has started exploring their musical preferences, we can continue developing perfect technique, as well as practical improvisation and theory. Read More

Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. In addition, I believe that the student should have control over his/her development as a musician, so I encourage my students to create a list of songs they wish to learn how to play. Read More
