The most important part of singing is making sure no harm is ever being done - so healthy technique is the key, then, we start to focus on depth of sound, etc. I try to help my students find a way to make singing as natural and simple as possible, without overthinking and becoming obsessive about rhythms or pitches. Of course everything should be accurate, but the more the vowels are forward (like in speech), the jaw and tongue can move freely and independently (just like when we yell), and the breath is constant, then everything will be in tune. I began teaching private voice lessons to high school-age children in 2016. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with people ages 5-30. The Metropolitan Opera Guild was an excellent teaching experience, where my mentors included teachers at Lincoln Center and New England Conservatory alumni. As a participant in NEC's Vocal Pedagogy program, I had the experience of teaching lessons to my colleagues in NEC Opera. When a new student comes in for their first lesson, I always make sure that they have a grasp of the fundamentals. Without the fundamentals it is very easy to develop poor technique that will at best limit them in what can be accomplished on the instrument, and at worst lead to pain or injury from playing. I will start my beginner piano lessons with "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" "John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Part I." Basic music theory such as determining lines spaces (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge F.A.C.E) and basic 1-5 fingering patterns. Depending on the level of the beginner, we could practice "Hot Cross Buns," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" "Happy Birthday" or "Ode to Joy."
