With beginners and especially children, I only assume that one's knowledge of the guitar is at best at a basic level. I'll begin by teaching how to hold the instrument as well as posture. Also I'll teach basic strumming patterns for the student to get familiar with the guitar. With students at an intermediate level, I'll ask how much they may already know, or what they would like to learn. Read More

"The art of teaching is the Art of assisting discovery" - Mark Van Doren My teaching method is always geared towards to my students goals. I know that the best teacher is able to identify what exactly needs to be paid attention to in your playing to take you to the next level. With these ideas in mind, the lesson are built from a combination of what the final goals are, and what needs to be developed to get there. Read More

I center the way I teach technique around what "feels" good to a student, especially older students who have already started, to make sure that we are able to prevent and respond to injuries. So, I start with stretching and will frequently refer back to exercises that are meant to integrate physical ease into playing. Aside from that, I try to balance a consistent routine/expectation of things I want to cover (asking for things a week in advance, always playing a scale at the start of the lesson, etc), while also meeting a student where they are at on the day. The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter). I do focus on things in order though. If you don't know your fundamentals, then that's where we start no matter what. After learning fundamentals, however, we can begin to pick and choose the battles and wars. Read More
Instruments: Lute Double Bass
I've been teaching double bass since high school when I was a volunteer teacher at Austin Soundwaves, an El Sistema inspired organization. The organization's cause was to provide access to music-making to underserved communities in the Austin area. I really love being able to give back to the community I live in by sharing what I've learned over the course of my career and education. Similarly, I've provided additional lessons to students in the BYSO Intensive Community Program as a part of the music pedagogy courses I took at Boston University. Read More

For students beginning on any brass instrument, the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements is the go to for most music educators. I also try to find solo repertoire for students based on their age and level of experience. Performing as a soloist is just as important as being in an ensemble. The Rochut Legato Studies for trombone and Blahzevich Clef studies are also great tools for more advanced students. As for piano students, I try to determine what that student's musical interests are and tailor instruction to their particular level. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Bastien Piano Basics or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
