Since moving to LA, I have played hundred of local shows, toured around the US and to Russia, including playing the main stages at festivals with many thousands in attendance. I have recorded on records that have sold several million copies, including Robbie Williams (and his hit UK single "Candy") as well One Direction on their "Midnight Memories" album. I have worked with producers who's credits include Snow Patrol, U2, REM, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Robbie Williams, Silversun Pickups, The Fray, James Blunt, Neil Diamond, and many many more.Since starting my love for composition at 7, I continues to write and record, not only singing, but playing guitar, bass guitar, piano/keys, drums, mandolin, and harmonica, as well as producing and engineering, and mixing the session himself. For any type of student, beginner or not, I focus on building the skills of the individual to create successes on their own. My goal is to provide the student with skills and abilities that not only will provide them with a fruitful musical life, but also allow them to transfer the ethics and habits to any other career. I also go in depth to reasoning and pedagogical reasoning for my explanations so that the student can engage in critical thinking and draw conclusions on their own. Read More

I try to have as much fun as possible while still maintaining a high expectiation of performance.  I am, by trade and training, a comedian, so jokes and laughter abound. Most of my students might say I'm not as funny as I think I am, but we still have fun! I am, however a stickler for learning the basics of music theory and correct use of vocabulary. Students won't move on to the next level until I know they have a firm grasp of prior concepts. Read More

I've been teaching for over 10 years full time. But I've been involved with teaching and leading musical groups and bands for nearly 25 years. I have thought kids from 3 years of age to teens to young adults to elders over 80 years old. I have over ten years of experience teaching in the private sector as a music instructor. I have plenty of experience working one-on-one with students with zero musical knowledge to prodigies. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

I'm a passionate instructor who loves working with students from all levels. However, my specialty lies in teaching advanced piano students. Due to the wide variety of experience in the piano teaching career, I have had the privilege of working with advanced piano students. I have had more than 10 years of teaching piano experience ranging from working with a privately owned Montessori school in Buena Park, CA. to working for a Music School, Brea. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Music

Since I mainly work with teenagers and adults, I like to start with Alfred's Adult's Piano Courses. I like to find music that the student is interested in and to put together solo repertoire that they enjoy playing. This can be anything from classical music to the Beatles, Jazz Standards or pop tunes. I also encourage my students to write, to record themselves and play for others. If they are aspiring songwriters, we work on their material, as well as learning songs by their favourite musicians and specific songwriting exercises, which include rhythm, melody, harmony and lyrics. I like for my students to choose a song of their liking because the point of singing is to sing songs that bring us pleasure and make us feel good. A typical lesson begins with warm-ups; which helps to run inventory on the voice to see if its healthy and using proper technique. After warm-ups, we dive into the repertoire or songs we are working on. Well start by going over the words of the song, how to pronounce them, their emotional meaning, and your opinion on them. How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child can follow directions and remain focused for 15" segments, as well as discern between different types of vowel sounds, he/she is ready to start. The specific vocal parts (i.e. soprano/alto/tenor/bass) are not applicable to prepubescent children. It's only after puberty that a child's voice is no longer categorized as boy or girl.

When will I start to see results?
The teacher, hopefully, will be able to detect changes first. However, students will be able to hear volume and vowel control as well as the ability to sing higher and lower, just by doing it well!

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
When I was in Jr. High, the music teacher took time from her lunch breaks, weekly to get me started with voice lessons. Also freshman year of high school, I was informed by a teacher that I needed to go to college, thus changed my business courses to college courses. Teachers always represented something special to me. They were kind, knowledgeable and insightful. I tried to become those things myself. Hopefully, I've accomplished some of those. My Jr. High music teacher's piano playing was lovely and her attitude was positive.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was apparent that singing was my forte. Back to Captain Kangaroo, I knew that I could easily mimic the "classical singer's" voice. I remember thinking "Something must be wrong; I'm just a kid." Later, I performed in my first large talent show with my dad playing guitar and my little sister singing backup. Then, in High School, when my class opted to do a Senior Play, rather than the usual Musical, in which I was expected to sing a leading role, a concert was given so that I might sing my 1st major solo. It was "Without a Song." (Still have the newspaper review)!

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
The teacher should guide the student with exactly what to practice, how to do that, and why. Psychologists these days believe that one cannot attain mastery of a skill (dance, playing an instrument or singing) in less than 10,000 hours - so that's what we go for. I have mapped out how long it would take to attain a similar stature. (Of course, if someone has been listening to music and singing since childhood, such attainment is already on its way!) Beginners are cool - but they need to be mindful that all skills take time and work to develop. Hopefully developing their vocal skill is one they find worthwhile.

Classical Music in Cartoons: Disney’s Fantasia

...and he even held the post of Editor for Musical America for two years.   The pivotal moment of Taylor’s career, however, came while he was performing radio commentary during intermission of a New York Philharmonic concert; Walt Disney, then mulling over whom to cast as the “host” character in his yet-to-come Fantasia, heard one of the broadcasts. He was sold on Deems Taylor.   Within a few days of a phone call on September 3, 1938, Deems Taylor had traveled by rail to Hollywood, where he began to enthusiastically compile a program for Disney’s new motion picture.   The Finished Product After extensive ... Easy Guitar Chords and How to Play Them

...When you’re just starting out and learning the fundamentals of playing the guitar and some easy guitar chords, it is both an exciting and frustrating experience. Many of the songs that you want to learn may seem like they’re out of your skill level. And if you want to play with other musicians or start a band, it might not feel like you have the versatility to keep up with other musicians. Often, when guitarists first start out playing, they find themselves restricted to playing simple riffs of just a couple notes. It can take time for your fingers to build the strength, dexterity, and resilience ... Read More

...dust from your viola, as the accumulation can also deteriorate the varnish. Keep a cleaning cloth in your case and remember to dust off your instrument after each time you play.   Strings   Sooner or later, your viola’s strings will need to be replaced. Strings should be replaced about once a year for beginning students and every 4-6 months for advanced and pre-professional students. In addition to producing a dull sound, old strings also have the tendency of going false, or in other words, they lack a clear tonal center that makes it difficult to play in tune. Also, if you notice that a string is ... Read More
