I have a wide variety of performance experience in piano, vocal performance, and composition. I have performed in over 40 shoes in both opera and musical theatre, from Sweeney Todd to Spring Awakening, L'Incoronazione di Poppea and Trouble in Tahiti. I have also an extensive background as a choral performer (both secular and religious settings). I have taught students of all ages in music practice, theory, and foreign language in both group and individual settings. Read More

I have been teaching for the last 14 years for other music schools as well as my home studio. I love to help new students from the ages of 4-99 in learning the joys of playing an instrument or instruments that they are going to enjoy. Nothing truly satifies me more than to see a student advance in their insturment as each lessons passes by. Daily quality and not quantity practice is something I like to encourage the student to be able to advance much faster in mastering the instrument. Read More

< My teaching experience includes public school, private schools, homeschool groups, and individual studio instruction. Most recently, I am an undergraduate music instructor. I love performing but more that that I love to see my students embrace a lifelong love of music. I employ a variety of hands-on techniques that engage students and use incentives to help them achieve success. In a collaboration with parents, I seek to know the student and set up a positive reinforcement dynamic. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to when I was in high school, when I began teaching beginning students of all instruments 10 years ago. I have been consistently teaching students in their homes, my home, and online for the past 5 years. Ive found that introducing students to as many different styles of music as possible goes a long way in helping students enjoy playing their instrument and listening to recordings of their instrument. From a family of musicians, I started playing the cello at the age of 5. After being a cellist for the Conservatory of Quebec Orchestra in Saguenay, I switched to percussion. I recorded the Flight of the Bumble Bee for the first time at age 14 and became a symphonic percussionist later with the National Art Center Orchestra of Canada as well as for the Ottawa Symphony while playing for the Starlighters and Savoy Swing Band at the Penguin cafe in Ottawa. I have taught music since I was in Highschool. It wasn't just lessons for middle schoolers or young children. I taught and ran my high school's Jazz Band when I was a Junior and Senior. Due to a lack of funding, it was not a regular class, so it was up to me to take the reigns. Since then, I have grown and taught many more private students, but also different schools and places. From Newbreed to Chapin to Afro-Cuban Rhythm for drum set, there are many methods that are worth exploring. That being said, sometimes learning songs (covers) can be the best way to learn quickly and it can be a lot of fun. Something I've done many times too is writing precise exercises for students in order to address and target specific needs. Let's say a student has difficulty with his ghost notes on his/her left hand, I can easily come up with fun exercises in order to speed up the progress and get improvements for that student. How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child can follow directions and remain focused for 15" segments, as well as discern between different types of vowel sounds, he/she is ready to start. The specific vocal parts (i.e. soprano/alto/tenor/bass) are not applicable to prepubescent children. It's only after puberty that a child's voice is no longer categorized as boy or girl.
When will I start to see results?
The teacher, hopefully, will be able to detect changes first.
However, students will be able to hear volume and vowel control as well as the ability to sing higher and lower, just by doing it well!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
When I was in Jr. High, the music teacher took time from her lunch breaks, weekly to get me started with voice lessons. Also freshman year of high school, I was informed by a teacher that I needed to go to college, thus changed my business courses to college courses.
Teachers always represented something special to me. They were kind, knowledgeable and insightful. I tried to become those things myself. Hopefully, I've accomplished some of those. My Jr. High music teacher's piano playing was lovely and her attitude was positive.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was apparent that singing was my forte. Back to Captain Kangaroo, I knew that I could easily mimic the "classical singer's" voice. I remember thinking "Something must be wrong; I'm just a kid."
Later, I performed in my first large talent show with my dad playing guitar and my little sister singing backup.
Then, in High School, when my class opted to do a Senior Play, rather than the usual Musical, in which I was expected to sing a leading role, a concert was given so that I might sing my 1st major solo. It was "Without a Song." (Still have the newspaper review)!
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
The teacher should guide the student with exactly what to practice, how to do that, and why. Psychologists these days believe that one cannot attain mastery of a skill (dance, playing an instrument or singing) in less than 10,000 hours - so that's what we go for. I have mapped out how long it would take to attain a similar stature. (Of course, if someone has been listening to music and singing since childhood, such attainment is already on its way!) Beginners are cool - but they need to be mindful that all skills take time and work to develop. Hopefully developing their vocal skill is one they find worthwhile.
