I believe that everyone of all ages can benefit from music lessons. Learning an instrument relieves stress and promotes optimal health. I believe that we are all creative being and music is a creative outlet. Researchers have found the acedemic potential of the student is increased by taking lessons for several years. I love helping others finding their own personal voice and helping them to get on their feet as an artist. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with blend of methods based on the game form of learning, in which all the appropriate to the child's age skills are acquired through the fun techniques and songs. For piano lessons I prefer use the Alfred's piano books or Hal Leonard's books, for voice lessons I use the methods of classical singing school, Set Riggs method and pop & jazz techniques, it depends on the style, that student prefers to learn. At night I founded my first rock band, Feedback, and later joined WD 40. Selected for the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 1985, I went on to write scores for string ensembles, a passion I am pursuing as an arranger and composer. My interests are motivated by my passion for world musics and the rhythmic complexity they offer which became the subject of my thesis on Afro Cuban Rumba Guaguanco. My classical and world music knowledge was put to service as a co-producer and director for MuchMusic-Musimax and BRAVO! Read More

I've been singing my entire life (I have home videos singing Andrea Boccelli in the bathtub) and singing has been in my family for many generations. I began playing guitar and writing songs since high school, so I have four years of experience playing and singing together, writing songs, and performing them. In high school I took a few lessons in a combo class for guitar and voice, but mostly learned from YouTube! Read More

I have taught young singers and actors in the past in both singing and theater (acting) as well as adaptations of children's books to theater. I love working with singers of all ages and seeing the progress they make through consistent lessons and at-home practice in a way that is joyful and takes apart a song, paying importance to the text/lyrics separately from the melody, then working on bringing the storyline of the character or the text of a classical piece to life. Customized Lesson Plans: Every student is unique, with distinct strengths, learning styles, and goals. I create customized lesson plans that cater to each student's individual needs and aspirations. By tailoring the curriculum, I ensure that the learning journey is engaging, relevant, and conducive to the student's progress. Foundational Focus: My teaching often starts with a strong emphasis on building solid fundamentals. A strong foundation in technique, rhythm, and basic music theory provides students with the tools they need to tackle more complex challenges as they advance. Read More

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child can follow directions and remain focused for 15" segments, as well as discern between different types of vowel sounds, he/she is ready to start. The specific vocal parts (i.e. soprano/alto/tenor/bass) are not applicable to prepubescent children. It's only after puberty that a child's voice is no longer categorized as boy or girl.
When will I start to see results?
The teacher, hopefully, will be able to detect changes first.
However, students will be able to hear volume and vowel control as well as the ability to sing higher and lower, just by doing it well!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
When I was in Jr. High, the music teacher took time from her lunch breaks, weekly to get me started with voice lessons. Also freshman year of high school, I was informed by a teacher that I needed to go to college, thus changed my business courses to college courses.
Teachers always represented something special to me. They were kind, knowledgeable and insightful. I tried to become those things myself. Hopefully, I've accomplished some of those. My Jr. High music teacher's piano playing was lovely and her attitude was positive.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was apparent that singing was my forte. Back to Captain Kangaroo, I knew that I could easily mimic the "classical singer's" voice. I remember thinking "Something must be wrong; I'm just a kid."
Later, I performed in my first large talent show with my dad playing guitar and my little sister singing backup.
Then, in High School, when my class opted to do a Senior Play, rather than the usual Musical, in which I was expected to sing a leading role, a concert was given so that I might sing my 1st major solo. It was "Without a Song." (Still have the newspaper review)!
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
The teacher should guide the student with exactly what to practice, how to do that, and why. Psychologists these days believe that one cannot attain mastery of a skill (dance, playing an instrument or singing) in less than 10,000 hours - so that's what we go for. I have mapped out how long it would take to attain a similar stature. (Of course, if someone has been listening to music and singing since childhood, such attainment is already on its way!) Beginners are cool - but they need to be mindful that all skills take time and work to develop. Hopefully developing their vocal skill is one they find worthwhile.
