Music was created to be ENJOYABLE (meaning it "brings IN JOY" to our souls) - therefore everything about it should be just that! My teaching style is much like my personality - Fun, laid back, with a good balance of buckling down when needed, joyful & a perfectionist. I will push my students gently & encourage them to learn the styles THEY want in a very professional and multi-faceted way. Having worked with thousands of kids & teenagers, I've learned that charisma is contagious & when given the proper tools & support, they can do exceedingly & abundantly more than what they (or I) could ever imagine! Typically, I like to start every lesson by spending some time working on specific vocal techniques. Good fundamentals are very important - developing good singing habits while getting rid of bad ones is key to consistent improvement. I believe that as a teacher, the best thing I can do for a student is to give them the tools to succeed outside of the lesson. We also spend time practicing musicianship skills, which means time spent on ear-training and learning to read music. Read More

I grew up in Stephens City, VA, where I started playing drum set professionally at age 16. Piano, guitar, and songwriting came soon after, and in 2005 I was awarded the Jazz Studies Scholarship from the University of North Texas to study drum set with the world-renowned educator, Ed Soph. At North Texas, I participated in the 6 O'Clock Lab Band, Advanced AfroCuban Ensemble, Chamber Brass Band and Brazilian Ensemble, and soon after, was commissioned to compose original music for the computer game Wriggle Words.. I received my bachelors in music education and began teaching privately during that time. I taught in my home studio and at The Musical Arts Center of San Antonio, and at The Stone Oak Youth Theatre and Dance Co. I have worked with students of all ages and musical backgrounds. I strive to balance technical skills with creative and artistic skills. I like to combine several styles in order to engage students and keep lessons fresh and interesting. Read More

Voice instruction is every bit about personal growth as it is about learning the instrument. Being able to stand up in front of someone and express something is a vital skill in both professional and personal life. As such, I like to cater lessons very personally for each student. Some students will need to focus on technique, repertoire, and music theory, while others will need to work on his or her stage performance and musical interpretation. Read More

I like to create lesson plans around what kind of music the student wants to learn. For example, most young girls want to learn Disney princess songs. So I print them off their own copies of the songs that they had expressed an interest in learning. I feel like if the student is not interested in playing or singing the music that I am giving them it could be the best curriculum in the world, but it won't help them learn if they are not actively engaged in the music they are singing or playing.
