I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I create a fun and comfortable environment for my students and always encourage them to believe in themselves and enjoy their performances. It is a basic book with specific essential elements for reading and understanding music. As the student progresses I use to introduce songs for their repertoire applying what they leaned in the book. I find ways to hone in on technique through song choices, visualization, the lyrics/text, poetry. Asking why a student is attracted to a specific song, pointing out some patterns of why they may like it, talking through the emotions behind it, or what it brings up and layering those "performance qualities" with simple techniques.
