My methods of teaching vary depending on how old my student is and their current level. For example, with a young beginner I will start off by teaching them the scale. (DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO) and showing them how each note correlates with a specific pitch. I will then sing the warm up with them a few times until they can do it on their own. Read More

I am an enthusiastic, compassionate, energetic teacher who loves teaching voice and piano! I love building enthusiasm for music of all types and genres! In 2022, I graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with high distinction in Vocal Performance. I have had opportunities to perform in venues like the historical Old Cabell Hall, the Kennedy REACH Center for the Arts, the PowerStation recording studio, the Cutting Room, and Green Room 42 (two historic venues in New York City). With beginning students, I will lay out all of the fundamentals, teaching all of the scales, basic chords, key signatures and time signatures, and gradually integrate strategies for reading music. Depending on what the student is interested in learning, I will pull from my pool of repertoire - we could be studying a Bach Invention at the same time as a Billy Joel song. Classical music is great for technique and in many ways textbook for teaching harmony, but I play and love contemporary music, and will teach anything, as long as there is some form of musical knowledge to be gained from the material. I am a constructivist teacher. I like my students to drive their lessons. However, there is a structure to the lesson. There is always a warm-up, theory and/or sight-reading, and choice time, where the student works on something they have chosen, and then time to work on something I have chosen.\ Lessons always end on a positive note! For beginning students, I prefer to use the Alfred's Basic Piano Course books. Once the student gets down the fundamentals and becomes more technically proficient, I introduce solo repertoire and get them started with some fun and musical etudes to improve finger dexterity. I also like to make the lessons fun and entertaining for the kids by playing some music games or giving rewards. For adult students, I try to find appropriate beginner piano books. Read More

I started on my journey when I was 18. I had been singing for several years in a Black Sabbath cover band , and I had developed vocal nodules. Back then, surgery was suggested, and so surgery I had. Thank god there was no scarring.. this traumatic experience immediately brought the study of my own voice into mothers forefront of my life as I was pursuing a career in rock at that time. Read More

I encourage students who only play piano to try accompanying other musicians or themselves in order to strengthen their skills, and I encourage singers to perform with a local choir, try out for school musicals, and generally volunteer their musical abilities in their community. However, I understand and fully support any student's desire to simply work on their skills for personal enjoyment. My teaching style reflects a strong emphasis on practice, relaxation, and courage.
