I found myself teaching at a very young age, being hired as the accompanist for the Dominican High School Summer Theatre Camp. These campers ranged in age from 5-14. I have accompanied for the past six summers, and I eventually held the title of Lead Music Teacher. At school in Chicago, I did some vocal coaching of my peers. I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. In essence, my love of teaching stems from my Mom's love of teaching. She sincerely desired to teach my siblings and myself to pursue our highest dreams. It turned out that I did succeed as a star performer in music, on stages around the world. But also, when I decided to settle down, I added education to my 10-year plan. I began to teach private lessons when I was in college in the year 2005. I started in a small music shop called McKinney Music where I taught in a back storage room. I taught beginning snare drum, piano and drum set. I had an experience there where a young 7 year old student who didn't practice and it showed. He felt so ashamed he began to cry, but I was able to calm him down and furthermore help him understand the lesson he hadn't practiced. Read More
