I will be graduating with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree, grades K - 12, in May of this year. I first ask each student to play for me so I can properly gauge the student's ability. From there, I assign practice pieces and songs that work on the techniques that require the most work. I have used this method for years and all of my students have found this to be the easiest and fastest way to improve. For younger students, especially children, I will begin their first vocal lesson by standing next to them and showing them how to stand with correct posture. Then I will move on to breathing by having the child place their hand on their diaphragm. I will show them that it is the muscle right above their stomach. In the best way possible, I will explain to them that in order to breathe correctly, they must be able to feel their stomach move in and out instead of their chest. Read More

I'm a teacher that focuses on lifting students up, while still maintaining realistic expectations. Whenever I start with a new student, I'll have a talk to ideally set up goals and expectations (for example, if a student's goal is to feel like a competent songwriter, all of the lesson plans will be pointed towards best achieving that.)
