I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. During our lessons, I hope to train up students to be creative thinkers and discerning individuals so that they can find their own authentic interpretation of the song. Read More

The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter). I do focus on things in order though. If you don't know your fundamentals, then that's where we start no matter what. I will start my beginner piano lessons with "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" "John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Part I." Basic music theory such as determining lines spaces (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge F.A.C.E) and basic 1-5 fingering patterns. Depending on the level of the beginner, we could practice "Hot Cross Buns," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" "Happy Birthday" or "Ode to Joy."
