Also performing in concerts gives them goals to work for so I try to have my students to perform at some assisted living places and more several times a year and the more they perform usually the better they improve. It can be encouraging to see that others make mistakes too and that noone is perfect. I like students to learn how to read as soon as they can, but I honor the suzuki idea that it is good to learn to play the first few pieces by ear so listening does not get lost in learning to read. I will give them fun book after they learn the fundamentals. After that, I would like to ask and help them to prepare their first performance. I find joy in helping students achieve their goals. I always aim for high quality, but also make the process fun. If the goal is to sound professional, I make sure we spend a good amount of time working on scales, etudes, and learning the essential classical music like the Bach six Sonatas and Partitas. I like the Galamian violin playing methods, and find them very effective to teach. I do this with almost all levels of students, as it solidifies the technical skills of a performer, allowing them to express themselves musically. Read More
