Often, the song is in a different genre entirely!) Piano: I generally teach from the Alfred Beginning Piano series, and the Hanon book of 60 exercises, to build strength and dexterity in the fingers. Theory and sightreading is introduced on day-one, and emphasized in every lesson going forward. I will always recommend additional books that are tailored to your interests -- there are a few blues fakebooks I love to recommend, for example, as well as classical etudes, improv books, and more, all to help round out your education. I have been teaching out of my home off and on the last 25 years. I've been the master piano teacher, rock band teacher and concert director at a music performance school the last few years but I'm back to my basic love of teaching since I've just relocated to the West coast. Because progression will produce a passion for your instrument whether it's piano or vocals, I emphasize regular and consistent weekly practice at home with times varying depending on age and proficiency. I started playing the violin in 7th grade. It was a struggle for me to learn the instrument and how to read music, until I started taking lessons. I was inspired by a best friend to pick up guitar and learned to play as best as I could without a teacher. Read More

I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. I began offering private string lessons in College during summers in Florida. I taught private string lessons. Further into my education I took internships in music therapy working with many different populations. I gave therapeutic music lessons to patients in hospitals like Massachusetts General Hospital, Worcester Recovery Center and McLean Hospital. There I ventured into teaching guitar and voice. At Berklee College of Music, I worked with young children during our city's Beantown Jazz fest to help introduce them to new instruments. Read More

My general philosophy in music teaching is to ensure that the student, regardless of background and ability, learns something from music aside from performance skills. Nothing excites me more than to see that a student feels happy from learning something new or overcoming a challenge. However, I also aim to build a positive relationship with students by seeking new ways to keep the lessons fun and to ensure that they are satisfied with the music they are learning, etc. Read More
