I opened my clarinet studio while in college. Over the next decade, my studio grew to over 40 students. It was a diverse studio with clarinetists of all levels and ages! I started teaching my nephew, who was fourteen at the time, the guitar. First, with the basic easy chords. Then, we would play along together, especially the easy songs he liked. After some time, he began to get excited about the guitar, and began practicing on his own. Now he is teaching guitar in Orlando while he attends University of Central Florida. Since I am also a composer and arranger, I tend to be partial towards the use of my own "homemade" methods.... taking on the idea of composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann (example would be Album of the Young) and writing simple pieces that reinforce specific technical challenges like double thirds, left hand arpeggios, consecutive octaves, pedalling and so on. Sometimes if I have a student that likes Pink Floyd or Eric Clapton, for instance, I will do my best to come up with a simplified version of a particular song using good ole staff paper. Read More
