Since I am also a composer and arranger, I tend to be partial towards the use of my own "homemade" methods.... taking on the idea of composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann (example would be Album of the Young) and writing simple pieces that reinforce specific technical challenges like double thirds, left hand arpeggios, consecutive octaves, pedalling and so on. I teach my students to use their ears to guide them through learning. I give them the ability to experiment and work outside the box. In my experience, this has lead to far greater musicianship rather than strictly focusing on sheet music. On the other hand, music theory plays a role as well. I teach music theory in regards to approaching the guitar. My teaching experience started in 1984 in Russia, when I was a college student. Those days I worked part time at music school. Then I taught private lessons in Vancouver, Canada for 6 years.
