I have B.M. in Acoustic Composition and Electronic Music, 10 years of playing/performing French horn, 5 rigorous years of piano instruction and performance, and a whole lifetime of singing. All students will always have at least one piece that they have chosen to work on to keep interest while building skills. For adults I like to use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course. This has a site that can be accessed at home for extra help and accompaniments to play the songs learned. I add technique to adults to keep the fingers moving such as Hanon and Czerny. Adults usually know what they are interested in learning and I point their instruction towards their personal goals. Read More

At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. I have taught in a variety of settings including children through teens and adults, and children with disabilities, both online and in person, one-on-one and in groups. I started in 2014. I have found that the best method includes positive motivation, which includes both encouragement for what the student is doing successfully, and also pushing the student in areas where they may feel hesitant. As early as I can recall, Ive loved teaching. Whether that meant being a teachers assistant or elementary school aide in my younger years, or as a music educator throughout and post-college. In high school, I was a Dance Captain for my schools competitive show choir, and would compose, arrange, and choreograph. While in college, I went to several music educators conferences, and was an active member of both the NAfME and IMEA (Indiana Music Educators Association.)
