I have taught privately since 2006, though occasionally I will take two students from the same household, church or neighborhood and pair them up in what is known as a "partner lesson". Each person takes turns at the piano playing their respective scales, repertoire etc. and we offer one another encouragement as well as constructive criticism for those technical issues in need of improvement. Nothing is more rewarding to see a student enjoy and become a confident musician! I allow each student to move at their own pace, but always challenging them so they do not become bored. For the begining for those students that they don't know music i teach them the basic, for example i start with the rhythm and after the fundamentals. They are going to learn how to read simple notes. Once they have a grasp of the fundamentals they are ready to be introduce into the piano. I find that the key to enjoyable lessons is to discover just the right sort of pieces a student likes to play. No one likes having to practice something they think is boring. It is with this in mind that I also incorporate games and flash cards and activities involving action for the little ones who can't sit long on a piano bench.
