My first lesson is always focused on the student's goals. We will discuss background and interest in music. I will test range via keyboard and show activities concerning different diction exercises and breathing techniques. Every student has different learning needs and I tailor my lesson pace around them. I believe that singing should sound and feel natural. I work to find out how the students voice naturally wants to go , so that we aren't putting on a technique that doesn't fit. I have experience teaching all levels and genres and change my teaching to what is best suited for the learner. With piano students I enjoy using John Thompson and Alfred methods for beginners and I choose different songs as students get more experience. For voice students I use simple songs to develop their vocal technique. Through effective warmups and reading, students will develop musicianship skills. My practice is an evidenced-based one. I chose exercises that are specifically tailored to a certain vocal idea or skill that we are working on. From there, we modify the exercise to meet the needs of the student's unique body and other student specific needs (i.e. previous habits, personality type, etc.). I believe that while there are certain immutable principles to how the voice functions, these principles need to be tailored to the particular instrument each student has as well as their nature, and how they wish to express themselves musically.
