With beginning students, I will lay out all of the fundamentals, teaching all of the scales, basic chords, key signatures and time signatures, and gradually integrate strategies for reading music. Depending on what the student is interested in learning, I will pull from my pool of repertoire - we could be studying a Bach Invention at the same time as a Billy Joel song. Classical music is great for technique and in many ways textbook for teaching harmony, but I play and love contemporary music, and will teach anything, as long as there is some form of musical knowledge to be gained from the material. We will then work together to form a plan to achieve them. This will include exercises tailored directly to the student's vocal needs and desires and guiding the student to repertoire that will both be fun for them to sing and will teach them more about the concepts we are working on. For small children, I used kid-friendly method books provided by the music school I was working with at the time to keep them engaged and entertained. For older children and adults, I simply ask about their prior musical knowledge and the music that they enjoy so we could use that as inspiration. For beginning students, I recommend the Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements which are both great options for the basics of their instruments and both include fingering charts and fingerings for each new note they learn.
