I have had to repeat lessons never learned properly, try to skip necessary building blocks, muscle my way through performances that have damaged me physically, repeat and ingrain bad habits, and almost destroy my deep passionate love of music and the instrument that I have played for 67 1/2 years. I always pick music to study that the student is interested in as well as classic pieces that are timeless relics in the music world. A vital part of developing voice repertoire is exploring various interests and styles. I encourage all vocalists to choose songs that they will enjoy singing, but I will guide my students in exploring any realm otherwise not explored. I encourage healthy singing and practicing techniques that will ensure productive rehearsal without fear of vocal damage. A professor of mine used to always say, "there is no singing without acting", and I ensure that when a student sings a song, they will not only know how to sing properly, but they will also have a deep understanding of what they are singing about and how to convey the message. Patience. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults nearing their 50's and the one universal approach I take with all of them is taking every day as a step forward. I am never aggressive with my students. I believe in pushing them to the next level but never through negativity. I usually take the first lesson to gauge what the student wants from learning their specific instrument. If they want to learn a specific song, if they want to get better at a certain genre, or if they just want something to do as a hobby! I believe it is counterproductive to force a certain system or lesson series that the student is not interested in.
