Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice
I think voice especially has always been viewed as a bit of a mystery... you can't see or touch your voice as you sing, unlike playing instruments, so there's a certain amount of imagination that has to be involved. I do my best to straddle making singing as tangible as I can, and approach things somewhat scientifically ("This muscle is used in this way," etc.) while also inspiring visualization ("Send your sound out into the distance," etc.) I also really think it's important for musicians to be diverse, so not only will we learn chord and strumming patterns on a guitar, we'll also learn how to read simple lead lines of solos, etc. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice
I have been been playing piano in an academic setting for 20 years, voice for 9 years, and guitar for 8. During my time in high school I began teaching by tutoring my peers in music performance, music theory, and music history. I have studied various musical genres and I always love to cater my lessons to the needs of each individual student. I make it a habit of writing exercises for students so that they can work on something specifically suited to their current musical ability, and will help them grow as a performer. Read More

I begin my Classical students with the Julian Sagreras guitar method book, then move into the Aaron Shearer Learning the Classic Guitar series. Once students have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, we begin on solo repertoire. For contemporary styles, I prefer to start complete beginners on the Hal Leonard guitar method books, and then I encourage them to seek out artists that they enjoy. In all of my lessons, students will analyze chord structures, sing and dictate melodies, and learn history about the guitar and general music. Read More

I definitely believe in realistic goals and I think one of the most important things during learning is that my students properly know what they have to do to be prepare for the next lessons and to achieve the current goal! I also really encourage my students in having a daily and enjoayble instrument practice. I am sure that doing at least 30 minutes technique exercises every day is the best way to feel comfortable with our instrument quickly. Read More

I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. Hi! I'm Kurt, singer-songwriter/composer, a multi-instrumentalist, and a patient and natural teacher. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, piano for almost 20. I release music as "The Broadest Blue"; I am in the process of recording my second album--the first (plus two singles) are available on all streaming platforms. I've played every little bar venue in the East Village, directing a complex musical outfit built to play music with brass and string parts (all music, lyrics, and arrangements written by me). I like to set realistic goals for students to achieve. The most important thing is that they develop a love and passion for the language of music and learn to communicate through it! This takes a lot of time and can be frustrating at first so I often have students focus more on completing tasks than on how long they're playing every day. This helps them maintain a healthy relationship with music where they feel like they're achieving something right from the beginning! Read More
